Move It!

January 10, 2012
Calming Movements
Leo Daily Horoscope

You may feel nervous and jumpy today. When difficulties arise, you could overreact emotionally and feel as if tension were suffusing your entire being. You may also feel your sense of anxiety expand into your body, causing you pain and stiffness. You may, however, be able to relieve both your mental and physical symptoms simultaneously by engaging in exercise or meditation. Because the mind and body are intimately connected, calming activities that focus on working tension out in one area can have a similarly positive effect on the other. Today can be the perfect time to begin an exercise routine or invite loved ones to meditate with you.

When you exercise, the anxiety in your mind is relieved as the tension in your body is drained away. Simple, repetitive movements can do much to calm a nervous mind and help you regain clarity of thought. As you utilize your body's muscles, you reconnect with the earth and ground yourself, both in the physical plane and in your body. Life-giving oxygen floods your body's systems and to your brain, giving you the strength you need to overcome your worries and soothe your spirit. The intensity of your emotions will lessen as you get lost in the cadence of your physical movements, and a feeling of sweet serenity will remain. Taking time to exercise today will help you release the tension in body and mind so that you are more present to life.

Good advice from Daily Om, think I'll go on a nice long walk today.  The weather here has been gorgeous, although we did have to turn the AC back on, it was just too humid in the house.  Looks like another cool front will be coming in toward the end of the week, yay!

As you know, it's Pizza Night here at the Castle, and I'm scrambling to find a "no-white-stuff" substitute for myself.  I think I found the perfect one here, stay tuned for pics and review!

I have some errands to run and chores to attend to, but before I go I'll leave you with this exercise video from the 1960's. Ms. Debbie Drake, she was something else!

Ladies Who Lunch

Busy week so far, catching up on work after the lovely out-of-town weekend but took a break this afternoon to enjoy a leisurely lunch with one of my closest friends, Susan. I don't want to "call her out" but let me just say that this lady is looking incredibly svelte here of late! Being that both of us are working on losing a couple of pounds, we each had a Caesar salad with grilled chicken and lots of water. Even though we were at our favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant, we did not indulge in wine, pasta or dessert. Instead we filled up on each others company, delighting in stories, secrets and laughs shared instead of cannoli! Because no matter what Sophia says, I don't think I can get her figure just by eating spaghetti!

Besides, I want to save some calories for when I visit Allan in NYC in a couple of weeks! He has promised me the best Italian I've ever had..hmm...I'm sure he's referring to the food and not a person, right? *wink*

Not much else to post today, just wanted to pop in for a quick hello. I'll be doing some cooking and recipe sharing tomorrow, stay tuned!

Like Me or Not

"Like It Or Not"

You can call me a sinner
You can call me a saint
Celebrate me for who I am
Dislike me for what I ain't

Put me up on a pedestal
Or drag me down in the dirt
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But your names will never hurt

I'll be the garden
You be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
Because

[Chorus]
This is who I am
You can
Like it or not
You can
Love me or leave me
Cus I'm never gonna stop
No no

Deviating a little bit from the pin-ups today...I was listening to this song during my walk this morning and was really inspired by the lyrics. The older I get the more self-confidence I acquire, despite the weight & aging issues, and the less caring I am of what other people think. Very empowering indeed! Leave it to another Leo to put into words exactly what I'm feeling as I approach my 46th birthday.

P.S. In case you don't recognize it, the image above is Lilith (another kick-ass lady) by John Collier. One of my favorite works of art, love the serpent!

Morning Girl

So, I got up yesterday morning with a new attitude, determined to start this work week off on the right note. Knowing that I need to make some changes in my routine, I decided to go back to an old habit that worked really well in the past: No computer before exercise. Period. I woke up, had my morning coffee with Beren before he headed off to work and then I put on my workout clothes and hopped on the treadmill. Oh, I could hear my laptop calling me, taunting & tempting me with exciting e-mails and not-to-be missed posts from fellow bloggers. But I resisted. I clicked on the DVR and turned my back on the internet, immersed myself in one of my favorite tv shows and before I knew it 30 minutes was gone! Then and only then did I sit down at my desk and enter cyberworld. It really set the day in motion and helped keep me on track, am happy to report that for the first time in a long while I was Perfectly On Program! Yay, me!

This morning, same thing. By 7 am I have already cuddled with my boyfriend, crossed off some household chores, packed my lunch, laid out my breakfast, logged another half an hour on the treadmill, showered and dressed for work. Whew! After all of that, I feel justified in enjoying a little alone time, just me, my feline companion and the blogosphere! And, damn, it feels good to get that exercise over with first thing! Now, I must admit that I am, and always have been, a morning person. I am up before sunrise, and, unless I am being highly entertained...wink...I'm sound asleep by 10 pm. I do my best work, whether it be physical or mental, in the wee hours before the rest of the planet is awake. So, really, it just makes more sense for me to incorporate exercise into my morning routine. It's no hardship for me and allows me to go about my busy Tuesday knowing that I have done a very good thing for my body already!

On that note, I've got to share this hilarious vintage YouTube from back in the days when a housewife's biggest morning mission was making her husband the perfect cup of coffee! Enjoy, and have a Beauty-Full Day!

On My Soapbox: Self-Less

Watch this video and then read this site..am so sick & tired of the "women's magazines" and how they continue to promote skinny-at-all-costs and the you're-just-not-good-enough mentality! Kelly is gorgeous as she is, no need for freakin' Photoshop! I know, this is an old issue but it still just burns me up! Along with several other bloggers out there, I'm banning Self magazine. I have better places to spend my hard-earned dollar.

Mad About Joan

Since discovering Mad Men (admittedly a bit late), I have been devouring the DVD's and immersing myself in the 1960's. Oh, how I love the fashion...swoon...and honey, don't we all wanna be Joan Holloway?! I'll take her curves any day! *wink*

Isn't it Moronic?

Beren & I watched the film I Could Never Be Your Woman and while the movie itself was ok, the real highlight was this song, so inspired that I have to share! Here are the lyrics I especially enjoyed, followed by a clip of the very talented Saoirse Ronan. I can only hope that she and her generation of young actresses actually feel this way.

a young girl, wants to be a big name,
in movies, they must all be the same,
she wont need to sing or to act,
just loose all of her body fat,
and isn't it moronic?
don't you think?

It's insane!
that they loose so much weight,
its a young nicole , with no food on her plate,
its a fat lindsey,barfing up a cake,
they think they're all cute, stick figures...

End Fat Talk - Tri Delta's Fat Talk Free Week

Let's stop the negative self-talk and learn to love ourselves and each other - "fat," "skinny," and everything in between!
